EEEEEVIL PostPet Hacking Tricks

I first saw these tips on "Neko ni Zokkon", a Japanese Geocities page. (Click on the yellow link on the bottom of her page to go to the front page).

Anyhow, these "tips" require you to hack into the binary code of PostPet, in order to "change" the type of the pet after you installed it. YOU MAY IRREVERSIBLY DAMAGE YOUR PET. I (and the discoverer of the hack) refuse to take responsibility for any errors that may occur as a result of trying this trick out. Readers are advised to make a backup copy of their PostPet, just in case...

Also note that this trick has only been confirmed with Japanese PostPet, and PostPet Beta versions. It is not known whether you can use this trick with PostPet Premium or the PostPet Premium Trial Version.

Finally, you can NOT get any of the PostPet 2001 pets using this trick!!!
The PostPet 1.X programs (1.12, 1.13, 1.2) do not have the pet-data necessary to create images of the PostPet 2001 pets; that is why all PostPet 2001 pets will appear to be "Mystery Creatures" when entering PostPet 1.X rooms.

Sorry for shouting, but it's very frustrating to be repeatedly asked this question!

Okay, so the first thing you do (after you set up your PostPet's name, gender, species, e-mail info, etc.) is to open the file PostPetConfig.ppc using a Binary Editor.

I downloaded and used HexEdit for Win95... you can find it as shareware on ShareWare.com and other related download sites.

Select Open File on the Binary Editor Menu.

Open the file PostPetConfig.ppc.

HexEdit screen capture

In a little window or something, various little letters and stuff can be seen. Locate your own name. (You can change it, if you want.) Somewhere near by will be the identity of your pet, written in a four letter code:

  • IBAR for the Rabbit
  • RAEB for the Bear
  • EMAK for the Tortoise
  • *TAC for the Cat, where the * represents a blank space.
You can now type over those four letters, and type in the identity code for one of the four above characters, or one of the Mystery Characters. These Mystery Characters are something of an acquired taste... either you will find them uncute and stupid, or you will be perversely pleased at how weird they are. (I fall into the latter category.)

The mystery creatures are:

  • *AMU for the Unknown Creature, where a * represents a blank space (basically the PostPet equivalent of an error message. The original Japanese Beta Versions only had the Teddy, and if someone sent a message using any other pet it would appear on the old betas as this critter).

An UMA eats. Washing an UMA!
    Washing an UMA, part II

  • GNIK for the King PostMan... You've seen his picture in your PostPet status window.... Now have him deliver your mail!

    A Golden King Postman!

To repeat: It is your OWN responsibility to decide what to do with these hacks. If you decide to try them out, it is at your OWN risk. Keep in mind that you may inadvertently give your pet an identity crisis...
