MUKAU

The Mukau

The Mukau of Mata Nui are placid grazing animals, congregating in herds all across the open plains of the island. This remarkably adaptive species seems to thrive in almost any clime, ranging from the small Po-Koro herds to the fiery beasts of the Trem-Kron Break lava flows. A few hardy specimens have even made their home along the icy cliffs of Kopaka's realm, where they declare their presence with distinctive lowing honks.

Although generally docile by nature, Mukau are fierce defenders of their feeding grounds and young. An aggressive invader would do well to stay clear of their horns, for when agitated, Mukau are much faster than they look.

When they do not feel threatened, though, the animals are usually content to stand in a spot and graze all day, and they are easily domesticated if kept well-fed. To be on the safe side, farmers are usually careful not to make too many loud noises or sudden movements around their herds.

The Mukau
Mukau are said to be blessed by the Toa, a legend arising from their distinctive regional coloration and patterning. The amphibious pods of Gali's realm shimmer blue and aqua, while the Mukau who live at the grassy outskirts of Le-Koro blend into the forest's green. At the Stone River, where Gali and Pohatu's influences meet, the resident herds are dappled blue and tan. They do not live in the water like the Ga-Koro Mukau, but they will return to the river to mate, stirring up mud from the river's sandy bottom with their hooves to hide their activities from Tarakava and other aquatic predators.
