In the beginning
when time began
we crawled
Time passed
on the ground
we stood
seeking shelter
defiant
seeking food
waving at the sky
In the end
will we crawl once more?
will we sleep in the ashes and cinders?
or will we burn in eternal flame?

Pictured here are Tahu and his people, biomechanical beings of fire.
They populate the foothills of Mata Nui, near rivers of lava
and ancient seabeds and grottoes once under water.
Many mistake the gleam in their eyes for foolish impulsivity.
Few live to regret it.

Tahu, Toa of Fire
And the Great Toa paused.
And He stooped to the ground.
Quoth the Mightiest of the Mighty:
"Who knocked my mask off?"
Tahu is the patron of volcanoes, lava, and various other elements
associated with geothermal activity and fire.
His sword of flames is said to cut through the hardest rock
and melt steel, in one mighty slashing blow.

Vakama, Turaga of Fire
"And thou shalt walk with Me," quote the Toa
"And thou shalt be my hand upon the others
Sometimes wrathful
Oft-times guiding."
The High Priest of Tahu is traditionally named Vakama.
While he (or she) is chiefly Tahu's representative,
Vakama may also speak on behalf of the tribe.
Only the wisest of the people are chosen,
for the position of Vakama brings with it terrible powers...

Temple Dancers
Flicker and leap
Hop and whirl
Someday, the fuel runs dry
Until that day
Reach high and twirl
Until the day you die...
The temple-dancers of Tahu, while appearing to be
ungainly and awkward, are renown for their grace
and artistry as they wave their long limbs like flames.
It is believed that the temple-dancers were originally
a military branch of the priesthood.

The Footmen
And the man cast his eyes down
and beseeched the Toa:
"How shall I harvest the ember-fruit?"
Quoth the Great Tahu:
"Look behind ye, for of thy steps
a new man shall be born..."
The Footmen are often mistakenly referred to as
a lower "caste" of workers and labourers. In fact,
the Footmen are respected members of society, due to
their sure-footedness and climbing ability.

The Spectres
Countless legends and local tales suggest that
there may be something out there, beyond life.
The spectres which are periodically sighted in
the upper reaches of the mountains may be the product
of an oxygen-starved mind... or they may be something
more.
