Postman
This page started out as an experiment of sorts. I have, in my continuing search for free POP3 e-mail services, amassed a large number of accounts. So I decided to set up temporary PostPets on these accounts, to see which ones work best! For most of the summer, while at my workplace, I busily set up and diligently checked the various e-mail servers for reliability and so on. Since my job ended on July 28th, 1998, the pets were all DELETED.

The results from each day are posted on The Delivery Room, where you can find out more about each pet, as well as find out how the mail servers were over all.

Known POP3 e-mail account providers, and PostPet Configuration Info

These are all providers of POP3 e-mail accounts of varying types. I have included my own personal experiences with them, where applicable; If you have comments of your own about one of these, please e-mail me and let me know.

Note that for PostPet 2.1, the format for entering your information has changed somewhat.

SMTP SERVER is still the same as before.

POP SERVER is the similar to the old "POP Account", only you leave off everything before the @ sign. (e.g., username@pop.nettaxi.com becomes pop.nettaxi.com)

POP ACCOUNT is everything that comes before the @ sign, or the username you selected for your e-mail account.

(Listed in order of reliability from my personal experience with them)

Favourite Freemail Providers

www.softhome.net The Free e-mail provider that I use! Doesn't always work well, though...
It appears that you have to check mail immediately before attempting to send mail... a very wise SPAM-prevention device, but rather inconvenient when you forget about it and get a "Bad Destination" error message!
SMTP server: smtp.softhome.net or smtp.SoftHome.net

POP account: username@pop.softhome.net

E-mail address: username@softhome.net
Internet- The City Takes awhile to set-up, but offers you a total of 10 megs for e-mail and website space! And your own FTP server! Very reliable!

Unfortunately, they also stick little ads for themselves at the bottom of each message you send using their server. So any Secret Diaries that visiting pets write at your house will contain plugs for Nettaxi's 10 MB free e-mail and website service....
SMTP server: pop1.nettaxi.com

POP account: username@pop1.nettaxi.com

E-mail address: username@nettaxi.com
Flashmail This e-mail service seems relatively reliable.

I use it for my Japanese PostPet Kitty, Isis.
SMTP server: flash1.flashmail.com

POP account: username@flash1.flashmail.com

E-mail address: username@flashmail.com
My Real Box No problems with this address since December 13th, 1999.

I use it for my PostPet Premium Turtle, Filth.
SMTP server: smtp.myrealbox.com

POP account: username@myrealbox.com

E-mail address: username@myrealbox.com
Yahoo/Geocities Geocities and Yahoo have teamed up to offer you free webspace, a POP3 compatible e-mail address, and more! SMTP server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com

POP account: username@pop.mail.yahoo.com

E-mail address: username@yahoo.com
TurboSport It's been a while since I tried this service, so I'm not sure how good it is. SMTP server: turbosport.com

POP account: username@turbosport.com

E-mail address: username@turbosport.com
Personal Mail This e-mail service provides a nice online mail interface; however, it only allows you to choose a combination of your first and last name as your membername/e-mail address.

I use it for my Japanese PostPet Bear, PolarClaw 2.
SMTP server: mail.pmail.net

POP account: username@mail.pmail.net

E-mail address: username@pmail.net
Populous Mail This e-mail service is also fairly reliable, although I have occasionally had problems sending my pet to others.

I used it for my English PostPet Tortoise, Filth (until Filth switched to a new server.)
SMTP server: smtp.pplmail.com

POP account: username@pop.pplmail.com

E-mail address: username@pplmail.com
Hempseed.com This site is trying to use e-mail as a political statement: namely, to legalize the use of the fabric known as "hemp" which is prohibited in many parts of the world.
Doesn't always work, and may, in fact, be down at the moment
SMTP server: smtp.hempseed.com or mail.hempseed.com

POP account: username@mustafa.hempseed.com

E-mail address: username@hempseed.com
POLBOX.com I had a bit of trouble connecting to this site, but I eventually got there. *smile*
However, the e-mail connection can be equally slow...
SMTP server: smtp.polbox.com

POP account: username@polbox.com

E-mail address: username@polbox.com

Freemail "Plus A Little Extra" Providers

Friend Factory This service requires you to download its unique software. As well as a free e-mail address, you recieve webspace on their server and access to many unique forums!

SMTP server: mail.friendfactory.co.uk

POP account: username@mail.friendfactory.co.uk

E-mail address: username@friendfactory.com
Crosswinds.net Based in Canada, just like me, so you know it can't be bad.
**wink**
Free e-mail, free unlimited webspace, heavy reliance on ads. Oh, and if the settings look too complicated, CrossWinds provides you with a nice little e-mail tutorial. This is very helpful, as the POP account is fairly difficult to figure out.

The neat thing is that all the "neighbourhoods" are on a geographic theme. There are so many cities around the world to choose from! Why not see if the city you live in... or always wanted to live in... is available?
SMTP server: mail.crosswinds.net

POP account: username@pop.crosswinds.net

E-mail address: username@crosswinds.net
Visual Cities A relative newcomer to the free e-mail/webspace world, VisualCities gives you the benefit of a nice, simple URL and a nice, simple e-mail configuration.

I use it for my PostPet 2001 Tortoise, Gamera.
SMTP server: mail.visualcities.com

POP account: username@mail.visualcities.com

E-mail address: username@visualcities.com
Telebot This service offers you free e-mail, a free fax number, a free virtual pager, and various other extras useful for the young people of today!

Unfortunately, I am currently having a problem with it, where I am told that the system is not configured to send mail. Very strange, as I can still recieve e-mails... I use it for my PostPet 2001 Dog, Boozehound.
SMTP server: smtp.telebot.net

POP account: username@pop.telebot.net

E-mail address: username@telebot.net
H and H development... A new Geocities-type web community, on an Alphabet scheme! Various options, from 5 MB space to 10 MB to beyond! And so far, the e-mail seems pretty reliable, too!

Scratch that; a few days after I wrote that, my hhdevel e-mail address stopped working. And their online page editor was difficult to work with as well.
SMTP server: fgn.net
(Just that. No "SMTP" or "MAIL".)

POP account: username@fgn.net

E-mail address: username@hhdevel.com
For Free The name says it all. ForFree.at also offers free webpages, and free mailing lists. SMTP server: smtp.forfree.at

POP account: username@pop.forfree.at

E-mail address: username@forfree.at
Netzero Free POP3 e-mail and free internet access! See if your area has a NetZero dial-up number you can use! SMTP server: smtp.netzero.net

POP account: username@pop.netzero.net

E-mail address: username@netzero.net

BYOSS (Bring Your Own SMTP Server) Providers

For these Free e-mail Services, you have to use your own ISP's SMTP server... if you use AOL, this may not work for you, and you may have to try another e-mail provider.
American Express Mail This, in fact, is a very cleverly disguised USA.net or Net@ddress Account. Presumably, you get the same POP3 service at USA.net. It has filters, forwarding capability, etc, as well as 5 MB e-mail storage capability. SMTP server: NONE

POP account: username@pop.amexmail.com

E-mail address: username@usa.net
Mypad Friendly E-mail Just your basic free POP3 service. A choice of domain names. SMTP server: NONE

POP account: username@MyPad.com

E-mail address: username@(whatever domain name you choose)

***Unless noted otherwise, the "password" box on your PostPet configuration section is the password you chose when setting up the e-mail account***

***Usernames and Passwords are generally 5 to 8 characters long, your choice, in letters and numbers. Be careful, as your password and username of choice may already be taken! Try adding your lucky numbers at the end in this case***

Services that Are A Little Unique

  • www.care-mail.com: Everytime you send free e-mail and e-cards, a donation is made to help save wildlife!
    Not POP3, but neat nonetheless.
    Another non-POP3 e-mail...
  • InfiniteMail:
This one claims to let you read usenet groups, as well as give you the option of either using it for webmail to read an existing POP account, or creating one on the server (Choose the "create" option.) I don't get how to use it, though... it makes it look like you have to download a program or something (???)

I hope this helped somewhat. If you need more info, feel free to e-mail me!
