Birthday Wishes

I was going to write a poem
About how much I hate you
About how much I loathe you
About how much anger and rage I feel when I think of you

I was going to write a letter
That was really a curse
That was really a litany
That was really a hope that all the hurt you cause
All the hate you cause
All the hypocrisy and crudity and meanness within you
Would come back upon you a hundred fold
Leaving you cold
And alone
And unloved
And unworthy of love

Then it occurred to me
That what I really meant
Was:

I miss who I used to think you were.
A basically likeable kid.
