March Rant

That Wacky Tarantulas

(A look at the Beast Wars Metals Episode 4)

The pre-episode "Remember to watch the show in a well-lit room at a good distance from the TV!" message is voiced-over by Tarans/Tarantulas, who tells the Widdle Kiddies to be good and be sure that they not sit too close to the TV when watching. Although his written message does not have nearly as many cutesy hearts and such as, say, Megatron, he has a definite Mister Rogers quality to his writing style.

Not much to say about this episode, other than to note that the adlibbed snappy patter goes by so quickly that I couldn't actually decipher a lot of it. This is especially the case with characters like Quickstrike and Inferno who have a relatively long speech quirk tacked on to the ends of their sentences and phrases.

Other notes:

The little wee bug-bot/lightbulb bug thingie that Tarantulas utilizes appears to be intelligent. At the very least, it chirps things like "Time to work, time to work!" in a cute chipper voice and, upon being called by Tarantulas, skitters forward in an endearing fashion, asking: "Did I do a good job? Do I get a reward now? Did I do okay?" and promptly being crushed by Tarantulas' foot.

One wonders why the translator was cruel enough to cutesify a little prop whose fate was to be destroyed. Possibly this was meant to magnify Tarantulas' callousness and cold pragmatism. Then again, maybe they just wanted to traumatize the Little Kiddies.

In another "Why, Ghod? WHY?!" moment, Silverbolt is given such sad dialogue as "Flappy-flappy!" as he swoops down. He seems to swing from being an Earnest Young American Gentleman to being an innocent naif with the vocabulary of a five-year old. Incidentally, the whole American thing may be a result of the Japanese assumption that Americans (and, indeed, English-speakers) are more likely to be chivalrous and nice to the ladies. It certainly seems to be that way in this episode, with the Japanese-speaking Tarantulas willing to harm Blackarachnia, and the American/ furrin-talkin' Silverbolt unable to harm a lady.

Also, the silly little characters-transforming clips before and after commercials continue. The highlight for this episode is probably Rhinox, whose voice-over says:

"Hi, I'm Rhinox. I'm single, and currently looking for a serious relationship hopefully ending in marriage..."

Quote of the Episode: Not Now, Dear. Wait 'til After the Briefing.

(Megatron finishes giving his orders.)

Inferno: "Yes, my Queen!"

Megatron: (in a drag queen/S&M queen effeminate drawl) "You boys better work hard now..."

Oscar Moment: Tarantulas in his Shiny New Lair

Tarantulas: "Mwahaha! This is the ideal hideout! Now, if only I had a wife! 'Dearest, would you like to take a nice hot bath now? Or perhaps you'd like dinner first? Oh darling husband, please let me give you a massage.' Mwahahahahahaa!!!"

[For the record, I'm fairly sure most of that was just Mad Scientist Laughter in the original English.]

Random Observations:

The "Next Week, on Beast Wars!" bit is narrated by Dinobot, who declares that he's leaving. The narration that goes on after the episode is officially over has him continuing to rant:

"I'm quitting! No, really, I mean it! ... Isn't anyone going to stop me? *sob*"

There there, Dinobot. I'm sure your many female fans would be heartbroken to see you leave.
This concludes my protracted ramble on "Kattobi Tarans", aka episode 4 of Beast Wars Metals.
