IRC SPEAK

I actually agonized whether to just have an online Bulletin Board/Board room and just use that as a diary-slash-rant page, but I decided that it'd be too much trouble to ensure that people didn't scribble stuff in without my permission. So I'm back to my traditional style of typing up a diary entry/rant offline in HTML form, and uploading it to the website when I find the time. Bwaaaah.

Oh, and I've taken up the bad habit of using a unique type of IRC-speak in my writing. Here's a brief guide to what they mean:

  • Bwah! (or, Bwa!) --- A quick exclamation of delight or humour.
  • Bwahahaha. Ha. (or, Mwahahaha. Ha.) --- Deliberately evil laughter, eventually tapering down to a sort of "Hrm. Now, where was I?" kind of embarassment.
  • Bwaaaaaaaa. --- An incoherent scream or bellow of either rage, or profound melancholy.
  • A-heh. --- Embarassed or self-conscious laughter.
  • Hrm. --- A cough, usually meaning, "Well then. Er. I don't know what to say next."
  • :D --- Big smile or laugh or grin.
  • :p --- Tongue sticking out in a "nyeah" fashion. Often used, ironically enough, to show that a tongue-in-cheek comment has been made, or that I'm being sarcastic/ironic/humourous.
  • ;p --- Same as above, only I'm winking.
  • :/ --- Troubled, or unhappy. I actually use this expression a lot in real life, although most mistake it for a generic frown.
  • o.O --- One of the few non-sideways smilies I use. Denotes extreme surprise.
  • ^o.O^ --- Extreme surprise, with cat ears.

I *think* that's about it. Oh, and the stars tend to denote emphasis, such as a word meant to be in italics (although in some programs it defaults into BOLD print). Although stars used like this
*wink*
denote a text-only emoticon/action. You'll just have to figure out which it is from the context, I guess, although I'm slowly curbing my tendency to use asterisks for emphasis...

I also sometimes use /slashes to indicate the parts that should be in Italics/, although this isn't an IRC habit, but something I picked up in junior high school when I did a lot of my writing by hand, and had no word processor with italics capabilities. And when I do _this_, the underscores represent the fact that the word should be underlined.

This... wasn't a rant as such, I now realize. But hopefully it will have made my writing and conversations a little less incoherent and bewildering.
